FORT HALL, Idaho – For the past few years, Wiley Petersen has avoided the question.

Two weeks ago, in Kansas City, Mo., the answer came.

“I’m done riding.”

The decision effectively had been made months ago. The 33-year-old, sitting out with yet another in a recent string of injuries, came to the realization that riding bulls had become a job. He no longer had the passion he’d once had.

Last fall, during a conversation with his friend Todd Pierce, Petersen confided that he was finding it difficult to prepare mentally and emotionally for a return.

Pierce asked Petersen if he would still choose to ride bulls if he knew he was financially secure for the rest of his life.

No one had put the question to him like that, and that day, Petersen knew it was time to quit.

“You’re 30-some-odd years old and you’re done,” he said. “That’s hard. It’s weird. It’s weird to say I’m retiring. Yeah, I’m done riding bulls, but I’m far from being done doing anything else. It’s not like I’m going to get an RV and start heading to Phoenix for the winter. I’m 30 years old and I still have a whole life ahead of me, so this is just a chapter that’s come to an end.

“I’m going to continue taking those experiences that I’ve had and pass them on to the younger generation.”

Petersen retires from the PBR having competed in 274 Built Ford Tough Series events. He’s won 13 of them, including the 2007 PBR World Finals. He’s nodded his head 729 times on the rankest bulls in the world, and made the whistle on 356 of them for an impressive career average of 48.83 percent.

His best season came in 2007 when he finished fourth in the world. In 2006, 2008 and 2009, he finished the season with a riding average of 50 percent or better.

But in the past two years, he rode in just one BFTS event because of injuries to his knees, left shoulder and groin muscle.

“I was playing it safe more than I was putting it all on the line,” he said.

Professional bull riding is the most dangerous sport in the world, and according to Petersen, it can’t be about money. It has to be about the love of the game.

While he loves the sport, it had become just a way to look after his family financially. Petersen and his wife Amy, who works as a nurse, have two small boys, Kadenand Rylan.

He’ll miss the camaraderie in the locker room and the weekly interaction with PBR fans, but being home will give him more time with his family, and more time to coach Little League games. He also plans to continue working with up-and-coming bull riders.

He’s not unprepared for life after competition.

He’s released a workout video, taught bull riding schools, mentored youth groups at church camps, performed mission work and made himself available to newcomers on the BFTS. He plans to continue those things, and even work to educate bull riders on the importance of being well-rounded professional athletes.

He hopes to share his story, and perhaps make an impact on others.

“I’m from Fort Hall, Idaho,” said Petersen. “I wasn’t the standout bull rider in high school and all that, and I made it to the PBR.”

As for the next step, he said, “It’s definitely unnerving. It’s a little scary, but I’m going to take the same attitude I did when I was first starting to ride bulls.”

In the immediate future, he plans to continue representing his sponsors – Project Filter and Herculiner – and, on Aug. 8, he’ll host his annual Touring Pro Division event in Fort Hall.

“I was comfortable with bull riding,” he said. “That’s my world. That’s what I know, but with work and dedication you can overcome anything.”

I have always believed in a creator, but like so many people in this world, I didn’t know the truth about him. My ignorant belief in a god that I didn’t know made me fearful of death. I was curious to know him and whether or not I would go to heaven when I died.

A friend of my mother’s was a Born-Again Christian, so I asked her what it takes for a person to go to heaven when they die. She told me that I needed to make Jesus my savior and ask God to forgive my sins. I did just as she said, but there was a problem, because I asked Jesus into my heart, but I didn’t give Him my life.

I went about living my way, but every time I did something wrong I had this little voice inside my head that would just keep eating away at me until I confessed it and asked God to forgive me. This is not saying that I was doing really bad things, but even the “little” sins would bother me. I never felt completely confident that I knew God personally, and I continued to live this way until I was eighteen years old.

Right around my eighteenth birthday I disobeyed my mom and she made me go to church with her. I was happy to go, because I thought that maybe if I went to church I would feel better about myself. I wasn’t happy with the way my life was going; something was missing.

When I went to church and saw the love that the people had for each other and for God, something clicked. God touched my heart and I knew that I had found what I was looking for. I learned that I could never earn God’s favor, but Jesus made it possible for me to be forgiven and have eternal life by dying for my sins on the cross. That day I repented of my sins and trusted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. This time I was surrendering my entire life to God.

I knew the road that I was choosing was not going to be easy, and there were a lot of things that were going to change in my life, but it didn’t matter to me. In light of what the Bible said about God’s love, there was no other choice to make. I was answering the call that God had put on my life, and I was willing to do whatever God wanted me to do.

Since the day that I committed my life to Christ, my eyes have been opened to so many amazing things that God is doing.  My life now has purpose and I know where I will spend eternity. Everyday I fall more in love with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

I desperately want to reach people with God’s plan of salvation. In order to do that effectively, I must keep my eyes on him and my ears open to his voice. I must continue to love God and love people. We have to put God first in our lives and be willing to do what he wants us to do. Everything falls into place when we let God do the work.

Question: How did you get started riding bulls?

Answer: I wanted to try riding steers when I was ten years old, so my mom signed me up at a local rodeo for kids. After I tried riding the first time, I was hooked (not literally). It became my dream to be a Professional Bull Rider. Praise God it came true!

Question: How do you practice?

Answer: The best way to practice riding bulls is to, well, ride bulls. I used to practice all the time, but now that I am riding almost every weekend, I don’t get on very many practice bulls. I just try to stay in good physical condition and do some other things to help me stay ready for competition.

Question: Do you ever get scared?

Answer: Sure I do. Fear is a normal part of life. In my profession, we have to learn how to overcome fear to achieve success. I do this through faith. I once heard someone say that fear is “false evidence appearing real.” I pray and ask God to give me strength to finish what I have set out to do. Don’t let fear stop you from seeing your dreams come true. Dreams are worth the fight!

Question: Are you ever home?

Answer: Yes, I am home a lot more than people think. I go home in between every event. I enjoy being home with my family and doing work around the house. Gotta get the lawn mowed!

Question: What do you say when you kneel down in the arena after you get off the bull?

Answer: I say a quick prayer of thanks to the Lord for keeping me safe. I made a commitment to God many years ago that I would praise Him win or lose.

Question: What is your ethnicity?

Answer: I am caucasion and Native American. I am a member of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes in Fort Hall, Idaho.

The Bad News

The Bible says that all have sinned and fallen short of God’s standard (Romans 3:23), and that if you have broken one of God’s commandments, you are guilty of breaking them all (James 2:10 ).

As a righteous and holy Judge, God has no other choice but to judge the sin that is in us. This means that all people are condemned to spend eternity separated from God in a place called Hell. This creates an urgent question within all sinners: what are we to do?  
  
 The Good News

God, in His infinite love for all mankind, has provided a solution for our spiritual dilemma. John 3:16 says that God sent His son, Jesus, to die for our sins. All we have to do is accept that sacrifice, ask God to forgive us, and walk in an intimate and personal relationship with Him. That, my friends, is the Good News of Jesus Christ.

 If you would like to have a personal relationship with your Creator, believe in your heart that Jesus died for you and rose from the dead and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord. Pray a prayer like the following:

“Heavenly Father, I realize that I have sinned against you. I know I don’t deserve your love and forgiveness. I thank you that Jesus came to die on the cross for my sins. I accept that sacrifice and ask you to forgive me of my sins. Wash me clean, Most Holy Father. I commit my life to you. I don’t want to live my life for myself. I want to live my life for you. Please help me to tell others about your amazing grace and abounding love. Thank you, Dear God. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.”

I am thankful to God for my family, friends, and the career I have in the PBR. I know that God has a purpose for everyone, and I want to let God use me however He sees fit. If He can use a bull rider from Idaho, He can use anyone!
